Chiara Dynys

1958 Mantua, Italy

Chiara Dynys (born in Mantua; lives and works in Milan) is widely recognized for an artistic practice that investigates the notion of the threshold—a conceptual and perceptual passage capable of shifting the viewer from concrete reality to an expanded, almost metaphysical dimension. Since the early 1990s, her work has developed along two complementary trajectories: on one hand, an attention to the symbolic potential of form and space; on the other, a sustained inquiry into the transformative power of light, reflection and transparency. At the heart of her research lies the search for anomalies, variations and subtle disturbances—elements that reveal the hidden architecture of perception.

To articulate this vision, Dynys employs an intentionally diverse range of materials and media. Light, glass, mirrors, ceramics, textile elements, video and photography all become tools for triggering shifts in awareness, inviting the viewer into an experience of passage, disorientation or cognitive openness. Her installations frequently operate as environments of transition: they generate thresholds, portals, reflective fields or luminous zones through which the spectator becomes an active participant in the unfolding of meaning.

Over the course of her career, Dynys has exhibited extensively in leading museums, foundations and cultural institutions in Italy and internationally. Her recent solo exhibitions include: ZKM – Museum für Neue Kunst, Karlsruhe (2008, 2012); Galleria Marie-Laure Fleisch, Rome (2009); Archivio Centrale di Stato, Rome (2010); Centro Italiano Arte Contemporanea, Foligno (2010); Galleria Fumagalli, Milan; Spazioborgogno, Milan (Switch On); Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Milan (2013); Galerie Hollenbach, Stuttgart (2014); Museo Carlo Bilotti – Aranciera di Villa Borghese, Rome (2015); Galleria Luca Tommasi, Milan (Poisoned Flowers, 2016); M.AR.CA – Museo delle Arti di Catanzaro (2016); Studio Copernico, Milan (Please Don’t Cry, 2017); Castelbeltrame Gallery, Milan; as well as her participation in the 7th Moscow Biennale at the Arkhangelskoye Museum and exhibitions at Valli Art Gallery, Miami. In 2017, her monograph was presented at the Triennale di Milano, underscoring the critical attention her work has garnered.

Through her exploration of perceptual thresholds and the shifting boundaries between material and immaterial, Chiara Dynys has established a distinctive voice within contemporary art—one that merges rigorous conceptual inquiry with sensorial intensity.
